Special Commissioner Delhi Police, Author

Ajay Chaudhry, joined Indian Police Service in 1996, and is presently posted as Special Commissioner ( Traffic) of Delhi Poice in New Delhi. He has also served as Joint Commissioner of Police New Delhi Range in Delhi Police. During his posting as Superintendent of Police of the Tirap District in Arunachal Pradesh, he found that great sense of alienation prevailed amongst the tribal communities which were being exploited by the NSCN militants. A new approach and initiative to take along the local population helped in bridging the gap between the administration and the local people which weaned away a large number of the youth from joining the militancy.

As Deputy Commissioner of Police, East District of Delhi, he went onto build a team which developed formal and informal networks to bridge the gap between the police and the public. He created platforms through which individuals and communities learnt to understand and appreciate each other. In East Delhi, where certain localities were considered volatile in terms of inter-community and inter-religious strife, the platform of Aman (Peace) Committee emerged as a site where people would come, share grievance and make sure that the tender psyche of inter-community relations remains unhurt.

Ajay Chaudhry was given the charge of DCP/South East District of Delhi created in the wake of Batla House encounter. The said incident had badly damaged fragile fabric of inter-community relations in Jamia Nagar area and even at national level. Despite the tensions and violence that was witnessed in post Batla House incident in Jamia Nagar, Sh. Ajay Chaudhry found that there was an irrepressible strand of pragmatism, which eventually helped him in moderating the outcomes of the very contentious issues impacting the life and times of people in the Muslim majority locality. Large scale public interaction through nukkad meetings, plays and peace marches restored the confidence of the minority community in the system. Again as Additional Commissioner of Police of South -East District of Delhi, he set up a library in Jamia Nagar Police Station for the general public. The opening of Police-Public Library cum Counseling Centre bridged the trust deficit between police and public. This endeavor to bring cops and masses under one umbrella has been widely appreciated in the national media and the number of beneficiaries have crossed over a million. He has made consistent efforts to promote communal harmony, peace and understanding amongst various communities and faiths.

He has translated Ernest Hemingway’s Old Man and the Sea and the ‘Farewell to Arms into Hindi. He has just finished his first English novel the ‘Son of Ganga’ which is under publication.
